Accessible Swiss Post portal www.post.ch

Swiss Post has set up its website – the Swiss Post portal at www.post.ch – as an accessible site according to AA+ criteria. In cooperation with and under the supervision of the «Access for all» (Access for all) foundation, the accessible status of the Swiss Post portal will be ensured on a continuous basis in accordance with the requirements of the law on equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

What are accessible websites?

These are websites that are accessible to all Internet users which can be read and understood.«All users» includes users who do not read information on-screen or use the mouse to navigate in the usual way. These are people with different types of disability (impaired vision, motor disabilities, learning disabilities) or those with older hardware that does not support all multimedia effects. The accessibility of websites is especially important for people with disabilities and for senior citizens as the enormous amount of information on the Internet offers them a greater degree of independence. Ultimately, however, all users benefit from an accessible website.

When is a website accessible?

The most important measures include:

  • The font can be enlarged as needed
  • The main navigation points can be executed with keystroke combinations (access keys)
  • Pictures with relevant content have an alternative text
  • Tables are not used as design elements (separation of presentation and content)
  • Additional invisible elements for blind users
  • Non-accessible content is specially marked

Use of access keys

The following access keys have been defined for the www.post.ch website to enable nagivation using keystrokes:

0 = Direct to the start page
1 = Direct to the navigation
2 = Direct to content
3 = Direct to the contact page
4 = Direct to the site map
5 = Direct to search

How the access keys work:

  • IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox to V 1.5: ALT key + number of access key + Enter
  • Firefox V 2 or higher: ALT + SHIFT + number of access key
  • Mac entry: CTRL key and number of access key

External content

A number of external content pages have not yet been set up as completely accessible. This relates mainly to complex applications that will be converted gradually. This content is marked accordingly and is not part of the areas certified by the «Zugang  für alle» foundation.

The main exceptions currently include:

  • www.postfinance.ch (e-finance application)
  • www.mypostbusiness.ch
  • Job offers
  • Track & Trace

Ongoing improvements

Technological progress enables improvements to be made on an ongoing basis also in terms of the accessibility of Internet content. Swiss Post has thus agreed periodic quality controls and a permanent exchange of know-how with the «Access for all» foundation. Public training sessions and information events are therefore being planned in order to promote awareness of this issue. Applications and external content will be updated continuously and made accessible in the next release.
